Vitamin D – a true all-rounder
Vitamin D performs a multitude of vital functions in our body.
It is widely known that vitamin D is needed to provide minerals such as calcium and phosphorus for the metabolism and is therefore indispensable for healthy bones and teeth. The vitamin is also essential for maintaining healthy muscle function.
But did you also know that vitamin D also plays an important role in the immune system and thus supports the body in fighting off infectious diseases?
Unlike many vital substances, the needs of which can only be met through nutrition, our body is able to
produce vitamin D itself. This happens with the help of solar radiation and body heat in the skin cells. The vitamin D3 formed in this way is first converted into a storage form and can then be activated if required.
In the darker months from October to March, however, the solar radiation is simply too weak for sufficient vitamin D production in Germany. And even in summer, our modern lifestyle, which mainly takes place in closed rooms, restricts the body's own production. In addition, the ability of the skin to produce vitamin D decreases by up to 50% with increasing age, so that people over the age of 65 are less well supplied with the sun vitamin.
