Selenium - why it is so important The body's own metabolism cannot form selenium, so it must be supplied in sufficient quantities with food every day. Selenium occurs in all cells and is an indispensable component of many enzymes. The selenium enzymes perform important functions in the body and are always active when cell protection is activated. In this context, selenium supports the metabolism in the cells, protects against free radicals and increases resistance to germs. If damage occurs during cell division, selenium provides the necessary repair mechanisms. In addition, selenium supports the body's own natural killer cells in detecting and removing disruptive cells. Therefore, an adequate supply of selenium is important for a well-functioning immune system, for maintaining the performance of various organs such as the heart, intestines, thyroid gland, bones and joints.

Selenium - why it is so important

The body's own metabolism cannot form selenium, so it must be supplied in sufficient quantities with food every day.

Diet should come first. With regard to selenium, this means that there should be sufficient amounts of selenium and other vital substances in the diet. In order to be on the safe side with the selenium supply, it is recommended to supplement the daily diet with selenium. This is particularly useful when the food is not sufficient to cover the selenium requirement - due to an unbalanced diet - or the selenium requirement is increased. Especially in times of high physical exertion, stress, old age, pregnancy and breastfeeding, our body needs selenium and often cannot be adequately supplied with the micronutrient. In addition, certain population groups (e.g. people with chronic utilization and digestive disorders, vegetarians) often take in too little selenium.

Selenium – why it is so important
The body's own metabolism cannot produce selenium, so it must be supplied in sufficient quantities with food every day. Selenium occurs in all cells and is an indispensable component of many enzymes.

The selenium enzymes perform important functions in the body and are active when cell protection is activated to intercept free radicals. In this context, selenium helps to protect important components of the cell, such as the genetic information, from oxidative damage.

A sufficient supply of selenium is also important for the normal functioning of the immune system and the thyroid gland.

Selenium also contributes to normal sperm development, as well as to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.

Selenium – a sensible supplement
Nutrition should come first.

In addition, certain population groups (e.g. people with chronic metabolic and digestive disorders, vegetarians, vegans) often take in too little selenium.
