Indication :

  • The medicinal product contains dried yeast from cultures of the defined strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae HANSEN CBS 5926 (in medical parlance also referred to as Saccharomyces boulardii) in a viable form for diarrhea and acne.

  • It is applied:

    • For the treatment of the symptoms of acute diarrheal diseases.

    • For the prevention and treatment of symptoms associated with traveler's diarrhea and diarrhea associated with tube feeding.

    • For the supportive treatment of chronic forms of acne.

Dosage :

  • Always take this medicine exactly as directed. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

  • Dosage:

    • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for children from 2 years of age and adults is:

      • To prevent traveler's diarrhea, starting 5 days before departure, take 1 - 2 hard capsules daily.

      • For acute diarrheal diseases 1 - 2 hard capsules daily.

      • For acne, take 3 hard capsules daily.

      • For diarrhea caused by tube feeding, add 750 mg (= content of 3 hard capsules) to 1.5 liters of nutrient solution once a day.

  • duration of use

    • Treatment should be continued for a few days after the diarrhea has ended.

    • To support the treatment of chronic forms of acne, it is recommended to take it for several weeks.

    • In principle, there are no known restrictions on the duration of use of yeast preparations.

    • In any case, please note the information in the "Patient information" and "Side effects" categories.

  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak.

  • If you take more than you should

    • To date, there have been no reports of poisoning with preparations made from dried yeast.

    • If you take more than you should, please contact a doctor. This person can decide on any necessary measures. The side effects listed in the "Side effects" category may occur more frequently.

  • If you forget to take a dose

    • If you do not take enough or forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose next time, but continue to take it as directed by your doctor or as described in the dosing guide.

  • If you stop taking it

    • The intake can be interrupted or stopped at any time, since discontinuation is usually harmless.

  • If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, please ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Please take the hard capsules whole with sufficient liquid (e.g. a glass of water) before meals.

  • To be taken by children under 6 years old, open the hard capsule by pulling the capsule halves apart and stir the contents into food or liquid (room temperature).

  • In the case of tube feeding-related diarrhea, only the contents of the capsules should be added to the nutrient solution.

Side effects :

  • Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • The evaluation of side effects is based on the following frequency information:

    • Very common: more than 1 in 10 people treated

    • Common: less than 1 in 10 people treated but more than 1 in 100 people treated

    • Uncommon: less than 1 in 100 people treated but more than 1 in 1,000 people treated

    • Rare: less than 1 in 1,000 people treated but more than 1 in 10,000 people treated

    • Very rare: less than 1 in 10,000 people treated, or unknown

  • possible side effects

    • Ingestion may cause bloating.

    • Intolerance reactions in the form of itching, hives (urticaria), skin rash, either localized or covering the whole body (so-called local or generalized exanthema) as well as swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, mostly in the facial area (Quincke's oedema), shortness of breath and allergic shock have been observed .

    • No information can be given about the frequency of these possible side effects.

    • Very rare side effects: Entry of yeast into the bloodstream (fungaemia)

    • Side effects with frequency not known: Severe blood poisoning (sepsis).

    • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the listed side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects that are not listed.

  • Countermeasures for side effects

    • If you notice any of the above side effects, in particular swelling of the mucous membranes in the facial area (Quincke's oedema), shortness of breath or signs of allergic shock, stop taking this medicine and tell a doctor (immediately) so that he can assess the severity and any measures that may be required can decide.

    • At the first sign of a hypersensitivity reaction, the drug should not be taken again.

  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

Interactions :

  • When taken with other medicines

    • Taking this medicine and medicines to treat fungal infections (antifungals) at the same time can make this medicine less effective.

    • A notice:

      • If monoamine oxidase inhibitors are taken at the same time, an increase in blood pressure is possible.

    • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using or have recently taken/used other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.

Contraindications :

  • The drug must not be taken

    • if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to yeast or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

    • from immunocompromised or hospitalized patients (due to severe illness or impaired/weakened immune system),

    • of patients with central venous catheters.

  • Application in children

    • This medicine should not be used in infants and young children under the age of 2 years due to the lack of studies on the dosage.

Pregnancy and lactation :

  • The widespread use of yeast as a food has not yielded any indications of risks during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Results of experimental investigations are not available.

  • Therefore, the drug should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Patient Notes :

  • Take special care with the medicine if the following applies:

    • A doctor should be consulted if the diarrhea lasts longer than 2 days or is accompanied by blood or a rise in temperature.

    • In the case of diarrheal diseases, especially in children, replacement of fluids and salts (electrolytes) must be considered as the most important treatment measure. Diarrhea in infants and young children requires consultation with the doctor.

    • A doctor should be consulted if acne worsens or does not improve.

    • If microbiological stool tests are carried out during or shortly after treatment with this medicinal product, the intake should be reported to the testing laboratory, otherwise false-positive results may be obtained.

  • Driving and using machines:

    • No restriction.
