Active ingredient and mode of action
Karsivan® contains the active ingredient propentofylline from the phosphodiesterase group - Inhibitor. It promotes the activation of adenosine, the decline of which with age is partly responsible for the occurrence of clinical signs of aging. The stimulating effect of adenosine means that Karsivan® counteracts the increasing signs of aging in your dog on a broad basis.
How Karsivan ® works
- Karsivan® improves blood circulation and oxygen supply to the brain, heart, muscles and other vital organs.
- Karsivan® counteracts the age-related stiffening of blood vessels. The vessels remain more elastic, the resistance is thus reduced and the work of the heart is facilitated.
- Karsivan® increases the dog's cardiac output so that the body is supplied with oxygen more effectively via the blood.
- Karsivan® improves the flow properties of red blood cells and prevents the formation of blood clots.
- Karsivan shows dilatation of the bronchi of the lungs. This supports breathing and thus the absorption of oxygen from the breathing air. You can breathe better again.
Administered regularly with the feed, Karsivan® supports the functions of the brain, organs and muscles through improved blood circulation. The improved oxygen supply to the brain may counteract the age-related decline in brain function. Some studies have shown improved appetite, reduced joint stiffness, greater endurance and more exercise pleasure during treatment with propentofylline. The improved oxygen supply to various organs supports the quality of life and vitality of your dog and will also make living with your old dog noticeably easier and better for you as the pet owner.

Circulatory disorders in the cerebral and peripheral areas.
Note:
Specific organ diseases (e.g. cardiac insufficiency) are to be treated primarily causally. If there is no improvement in the symptoms associated with the circulatory disorders during use, the treatment should be stopped in good time, depending on the type of disease, but no later than after 4 weeks.
Contraindications:
Do not use in animals used for food production.

Dosage instructions, method and duration of application:
Karsivan® is used twice a day at a dosage of 3 mg/kg.
Administer Karsivan® in the morning and evening, hidden in a little food or a treat. Make sure not to give the tablets to your dog immediately with a larger meal, but at least 30 minutes before.
Older dogs should be treated with Karsivan® over a longer period of time, usually for life. The clinical effectiveness can only be assessed with certainty after a treatment period of at least 4 weeks. If Karsivan® is discontinued, a return of the age-related symptoms is to be expected. If your dog's condition does not improve after four weeks of treatment with Karsivan®, you should discuss further therapy with your veterinarian.

If the kidney function is significantly reduced, the dose should be reduced.
The film-coated tablets can be given directly or hidden in a food ball or mixed with food and offered for self-consumption. Karsivan® is to be administered daily.

Side effects:
Rarely, allergic skin diseases (e.g. urticaria) can occur after administration of Karsivan®, which make it necessary to discontinue the treatment.
In very rare cases, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, ataxia, hyperactivity, dyspnea, tachycardia and collapse may occur.

This medicine does not require any special storage precautions.
Do not use the medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the container and the outer carton.
Additional Information:
In pharmacological studies on the effects of the preparation on rats, dogs, cats, rabbits and monkeys, a clear improvement in the microcirculation in the heart area, in the brain and in the skeletal muscles was measured. Furthermore, an improvement in the flow properties of the blood and thus an increase in the oxygen supply in the peripheral and cerebral areas was demonstrated. When examining this effect in clinical trials, propentofylline was mainly used in older dogs with complaints such as lethargy, tiredness, apathy, stiff gait, difficulty getting up and walking, lack of appetite, emaciation, hair loss, and dull coat. There were indications of an improvement in these complaints.
Depending on the symptoms of the disease, the effect can start after just a few days.
Propentofylline has been shown to be well tolerated when administered daily to dogs in the upper end of the intended dose range for one year. Vomiting and a tendency to changes in the red blood count were only observed when the dose was greatly increased.
